Blacks In Government is a non-profit organization which promotes EQUITY in all aspects of American Life, EXCELLENCE in public service and OPPORTUNITY for all Americans. The Coast Guard Chapter of Blacks In Government Scholarship Program is accepting applications from local high school students who will be graduating the Spring of 2016. Scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $500 to $1,000 in two categories:
Students must select only ONE scholarship category. Engineering Scholarship: Students who seek to obtain a college degree in an engineering field may select this category. General Scholarship: Students who seek to obtain a college degree in any field of study may select this category. The 2016 application period will start in January 1, 2016. Oratorical Competition
The Oratorical Competition gives students a chance to showcase their oral and written communication skills, is being promoted by the U.S. Coast Guard Chapter of Blacks In Government (BIG). The competitions are open to students in grades nine (9) through twelve (12). The 2016 oratorical competition theme is "21st Century Racial Equality, Justice or Injustice: Where are we headed?” The competition reflects an increasing need to assist our students with developing and enhancing their oral and written communication skills in order to be competitive in the global workplace. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Student Competition The STEM competition was expanded to promote science, engineering, and technology (STEM) capabilities at the local and national level. For the youth, the STEM-SC will also serve to advance their social and economic well being in the United States and internationally. This year’s competition will focus on robotics technology; specifically building a functional robot. The official theme is: “Exploring the Capability of Robotics Engineering.” It is designed to introduce and encourage students to embrace STEM concepts and professions. The competition project will give students a quality learning experience and challenge them to develop important STEM competences. No prior experience is necessary to participate in the competition. Students must work with a subject matter expert (SME) as a mentor. Students will design, build, and program their own mobile robots to compete against other students at the chapter, region and ultimately, national level. They will use robotics kits that provide various parts and pieces that will help them build and program a demonstration robot. 2014 10th Anniversary Scholarship Ceremony
The mission of BIG is to maximize career opportunities and provide a mechanism for inclusion and growth, which includes providing scholarships; therefore in an effort to meet this critical objective, the Coast Guard Chapter of Blacks In Government implemented a scholarship program which provides scholarships ($500 to $1,500 per student) to graduating high school students within the D.C. metropolitan area. Over the last ten years the chapter has awarded 56 scholarships to graduating high school students. The chapter is able to achieve this great accomplishment by receiving donations from members, friends, family, co-workers and through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC).
On May 15, 2014 at noon, the Coast Guard Chapter of Blacks In Government celebrated their 10th Scholarship Anniversary. The program was well attended by Coast Guard Chapter of BIG Members, Coast Guard employees and family and friends of the scholarship recipients.

* Amanda D. Browne (2006 Scholarship Recipient) - Maryland Resident; Bladensburg High School Graduate. Currently works for USDA, Food and Nutrition Service as a Public Affairs Specialist with the Office of the Chief Communications Officer
* Ebony Christina Ellison (One of the Chapter's First Scholarship Recipient from 2004) - Maryland Resident; Charles H. Flowers High School - Science & Technology Honors Graduate. Currently works in the Human Capital division of Customs and Border Protection (Homeland Security) as a Training and Development Specialist. Also work as a Community Support Specialist in Beltsville, MD, working with a mixed population in the area of mental health. A public speaker and currently owns her own business as a College Preparation and Career Advisor for young people within the DMV area and beyond; making sure they are provided with the necessary tools to obtain any goals they desire. Actively involved in my community and give back every chance she gets.
* Michaela Scott (2014 Scholarship Recipient) - Graduated from Thomas Stone High School in Waldorf, MD; plans to attend Morgan State University to major in Computer Science.
* Alston Clark (2014 Rear Admiral (retired) Erroll Brown Engineering Scholarship Recipient) - Homeschooled student; plans to attend Howard University to major in Engineering - Computer Science.
* Donae Latrice Owens (2012 Rear Admiral (retired) Erroll Brown Engineering Scholarship Recipient) -District of Columbia Resident: Benjamin Banneker Academic High School Graduate. Attending North Carolina A&T, major: Engineering
* Tammany Swann (2013 Scholarship Recipient) - Graduated from Thomas Stone High School, Waldorf, MD; attending West Virginia Wesleyan College, Buckhannon, West Virginia.
* Torrence Marunda II: (2007 Scholarship Recipient: First recipient of the RADM Erroll Brown Engineering Scholarship) -Virginia Resident: Garfield High School Graduate. He is a 2013 graduate of the Atlanta University Center Dual Degree Engineering Program. As a participant of the program, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in General Science from Morehouse College (3.76 GPA, Phi Beta Kappa with Honors) and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (3.90 GPA, Tau Beta Pi). Torrence is currently enrolled in a master of science program in Mechanical Engineering at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University where he is scheduled to graduate in May of 2015. He is pursuing NASA funded thesis research in the innovative field of thermal and mechanical fatigue analysis of composite materials for aerospace applications. After completing his master's degree next year, Torrence plans to begin his career in mechanical engineering at a prominent industry or government agency and eventually plans to pursue a PhD in the field.
